One thing that comes up a lot in my business and my community is the question of downsizing. A lot of times it’s the obvious next step after decluttering, but it can be a really hard step to take for a lot of reasons.
Patrice Washington is a best-selling author, speaker, and host of the podcast, Redefining Wealth. She and her husband decluttered their 7,000 square foot home in CA and moved into a 2,000 square foot apartment before moving into their forever home in Georgia. I just love Patrice and I’m so excited that she took the time to talk to me about this issue that comes up a lot.
If you’re thinking about downsizing, this episode is especially for you. But stick around even if you don't really care about downsizing because we ended up talking about so much else. OK, let’s dive in!

I’m so excited to share with you this conversation I had with my friend, Emily Ley! She is an author and the founder of Simplified—a brand of planners and organizational tools for busy women, which I obviously love. Her new book, When Less Becomes More, just came out recently and I’m so excited for her to share how she came to write this book because the story is so raw and so vulnerable. Let’s jump in to the conversation!

I feel like a misconception that’s made about me is that I want a simple, small life. But that is 100% the opposite of what I want. I want to live a fricking big, full, ambitious, extravagant life. And sometimes I hear people say, “Well, I don’t want to be a minimalist because I don’t want to have nothing, and be nothing.” And I’m right there with you! That’s not what I want either. At all.
So, if you’re like me and you struggle with the idea of a minimalism meaning a bare, have-nothing, do-nothing life, I want to share with you why I believe a simple life doesn’t equal a small life.

Parkinson’s Law states that the time you give yourself to complete a task is how long you will take to complete a task. However long you decide you’re going to spend on a project is how long you’re going to spend on that project. This thought, this way of living can really change everything for us. It is so, so empowering because it means we are in control of so much more than we give ourselves credit for or like to admit. Let’s talk about it!
